{"id":460,"date":"2017-05-05T06:54:26","date_gmt":"2017-05-05T05:54:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brandonheritage.org.uk\/?p=460"},"modified":"2017-05-05T06:54:26","modified_gmt":"2017-05-05T05:54:26","slug":"460-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brandonheritage.co.uk\/?p=460","title":{"rendered":"Newspaper rounds and the bookstall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Cherry Rogers reflects upon her youth &#8211; buying a book from the railway station bookstall &#8230;<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was just thinking how times have changed, when I was listening to two young children chatting while I was out shopping.\u00a0 Talk about being grown up!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_461\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-461\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-461 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brandonheritage.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/18278180_789691437863233_4722281767993741985_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"673\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-461\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Colin and Alan. They look the sort to tie a lady to a tree!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It got me thinking about my childhood and growing up.\u00a0 Playing down the &#8216;Rec&#8217; and in the woods at the back of Greens, having dens among the logs.\u00a0 It wouldn\u2019t be allowed now and if those logs had slipped, doesn\u2019t even bear thinking about, but we all did it.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Colin Rogers<\/span>, now my husband, tied me to a tree and set fire to the grass round the bottom of it!\u00a0 I think I was a human sacrifice or it might have been Indians setting fire to white man.\u00a0 Nothing changes!\u00a0 I remember my friend, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Joan Norton<\/span>, hitting him with a pink handbag.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone played out and lots of people went on to do a paper round for a bit of pocket money before they were old enough to start work.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t do one as I wasn\u2019t allowed to, but my husband Colin did one and so did his Brother Alan.\u00a0 Colin delivered for W.H Smith, of the Railway Station bookstall, delivering the Polish newspapers to the London Road camp.\u00a0 Lots of my friends delivered for<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Mrs. Green<\/span> on the High Street.<\/p>\n<p>These children chatting led my thoughts on, from paper rounds to starting work.\u00a0 I hadn\u2019t been at work for much more than a week when I was sent over to the Pine Vista, which was out of bounds for me.\u00a0 Happy days, I got in there at last!\u00a0 I wonder what my Mum would have said if she knew that after a few months working, I started in July 1959, I was sent over to the Railway Station bookstall to order three copies of Lady Chatterley\u2019s Lover.\u00a0 This was about 1960 I should think, when it could be published in the unexpurgated version.\u00a0 I as the office junior was sent to order the books.\u00a0 I thought as I was going I might as well have one as well and keep it in my desk drawer for lunchtime reading.<\/p>\n<p>I dreaded going to order them because <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bert Kidd<\/span> knew my Mum and Aunty Crystal worked in the goods office at Thetford.\u00a0 So I sort of rehearsed what to say on the way over and hoped he wasn\u2019t wearing his leather flying helmet because he was a bit deaf anyway.\u00a0 When I got to the counter he was doing his books, so I said, &#8220;I would like to order four copies of Lady Chatterley\u2019s Lover please Mr. Kidd&#8221;.\u00a0 He looked at me a bit astounded and said, &#8220;Pardon?&#8221;\u00a0 I had to holler it &#8220;<strong>FOUR COPIES OF LADY CHATTERLEY\u2019S LOVER, PLEASE MR KIDD<\/strong>&#8220;.\u00a0 He humphed a bit and wrote it in his order book.\u00a0 I scuttled off and thought now I have to go and flipping collect &#8217;em.\u00a0 What a fuss the publication of that book caused.\u00a0 It was mild to what is heard and seen on TV these days and what is published.\u00a0 I used to have a fit of mild hysteria when Nana was really riled and said &#8220;Oh!
