{"id":488,"date":"2017-05-07T07:04:02","date_gmt":"2017-05-07T06:04:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brandonheritage.org.uk\/?p=488"},"modified":"2017-05-07T07:04:02","modified_gmt":"2017-05-07T06:04:02","slug":"488-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brandonheritage.co.uk\/?p=488","title":{"rendered":"Dad and his shopping habits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>An insight of the shopping habits of Cherry Rogers and her late father.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shopping when I was growing up was quite a social activity.\u00a0 You went shopping with your list, to the market or to a shop, and sat down while the shopkeeper assembled your order.\u00a0 Sometimes there was a discussion about your purchase with the shopkeeper and it sometimes included the other customers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_489\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-489\" style=\"width: 440px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-489\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brandonheritage.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/18222408_790586074440436_8593232409367352266_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"368\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-489\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dad with his first van<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>My dad wasn\u2019t much of shopper and he sent me and mum to get all his stuff &#8211; underwear, shirts, trousers; we had to get them and bring them back for approval.\u00a0 If asked what colour he wanted, he always said he thought black was a nice colour.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t get it though, he got what we brought.\u00a0 When he wanted work boots or wellies, he took me down to <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Goodalls<\/span> in the van.\u00a0 I went in and told them what he wanted and brought out the boots for him to try in the van,.\u00a0 I went in and out as many times as was needed for a good fit and then back with the money.<\/p>\n<p>On a Saturday, in the Daily Mirror, there were pages of small advertisements for things &#8211; Doans Liver Pills, Elastic bandages, fence posts, sheds, tins of paint, ladies interlock knickers; you name it.\u00a0 My dad loved those pages and bought loads of stuff with varying degrees of success.\u00a0 He would scour the pages and say to me, \u201cLook at this Flo\u2019ee, that is good idea.\u201d\u00a0 He got hair clippers because he thought mum could cut his hair and it would save him going down to <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Caban<\/span>\u2019s.\u00a0 She was a master with them.\u00a0 He always had circles the size of a shilling which were bald because she got the clippers caught up in his hair.\u00a0 He only had a bit round the edges anyway and when he hollered, she laughed and said, \u201cDon\u2019t make so much fuss Jack.\u00a0 You shout before you are hurt\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Dad said to me one day, &#8220;Go down and get me a postal order.\u00a0 There is a good pair of gauntlets in the paper today.\u00a0 They are heated.\u00a0 Be lovely on the old motor bike.&#8221;\u00a0 So I went and got the postal order and posted the letter.\u00a0 When the parcel arrived, we gathered round the table and dad undid the box, quite a big box.\u00a0 He opened the lid carefully and looked into the box and we all peered in, looking at each other too.\u00a0 He took one glove out and put it on his hand.\u00a0 The big cuff was leather, the hand and fingers were canvas, they all had bits of wire in them and stood up as if someone\u2019s hand was already in them.\u00a0 Mum and I started to grin, then my dad looked at us and said very quietly, &#8220;<strong>CO&#8217; &#8216;TER HULL<\/strong>&#8220;, which translates to, &#8220;<em>Go to hell<\/em>&#8220;.\u00a0 Mum and I laughed until we couldn\u2019t stand.\u00a0 My Dad would have loved internet shopping.<\/p>\n<p>PS &#8211; for anyone who isn&#8217;t local &#8220;Go to hell&#8221; in this instance didn&#8217;t mean mum and I should, it was a comment at the gloves which really meant, &#8220;Well I&#8217;ll go to hell&#8221;, and an expression of surprise or shock.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An insight of the shopping habits of Cherry Rogers and her late father.
