Polish Camp
Today we had a visitor bring in two photo albums of their family from the 1940s and 50s, including time spent on the Army camp off London Road just after the Second World War. Anna McInnes’ parents, Alfred and Paulina Zelke, met while Alfred was serving alongside the British Army in Italy. Paulina was Slovenian and escaping from the Nazi rule in her native country. After the war the couple, along with many other Polish servicemen, came to this area – staying first at Bodney, then in Brandon; before getting a Council house on Rattlers Road. The couple eventually retired at East Harling. Anna was eager to share her parents’ story, hence her visit to the centre with the photo albums. We look forward to further visits from Anna and stories of her family in Brandon.
